Information from the (BWF) Badminton World Federation
The word from the BWF
Written by Liam Walsh
The BWF (Badminton World Federation) first spoke publicly about AirBadminton back in 2016. Details were sparse and not much was said about the new proposed outdoor format for Badminton until the full press release on 13th May 2019.
So what is AirBadminton? AirBadminton is the BWF’s official format for outdoor Badminton. AirBadminton is designed to be played on either grass, hard or sand surfaces making it suitable for parks, playgrounds and beaches around the world. It features the new AirShuttle which is specially designed to be more wind-resistant than a traditional shuttlecock.
AirBadminton introduces a lot of new additions and some changes to traditional Badminton. Introducing the all-new AirShuttle and Triples format and modified Badminton rules for service, scoring and court dimensions. Read on where we’ll cover everything we know so far about AirBadminton.

The Badminton World Federation has issued a number of recommendations to the equipment used for AirBadminton. The most important is perhaps the information about the rackets and in particular the tension of the racket strings. It is recommended that players use a lower tension on maximum 8-9kg / 17.5-20lbs when playing AirBadminton, but also to use a string with a higher gauge (thicker string) as the base of the AirShuttle is fairly hard and can cause the string to break if thin and with hard tension.
More information can be found here.
The Airshuttle is made with a harder material than regular Nylon shuttles. BWF went to many tests and this material has by far the best flight and rotation in the wind, however, it comes with less durability than indoor Nylon Shuttles.
However, the BWF are constantly working with the factory to improve the quality/durability/flight.
BWF are conducting more tests over the coming weeks and months to produce a more durable model. However, that might reduce the flight conditions and spin.
AirBadminton is an ambitious new development project under the Badminton World Federation designed to create opportunities for people of all ages and ability to play badminton on hard, grass, and sand surfaces in parks, gardens, streets, playgrounds and beaches around the world.
Badminton as we know it is a popular, fun and inclusive sport with more than 300 million active players globally, encouraging participation and excitement with a plethora of health and social benefits.
It can improve physical qualities such as speed, endurance, strength and agility; prevent stress and reduce the risk of myopia in children; help eliminate the risk of health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity; and help maintain a healthy weight in adults and children.
In fact, just one hour of badminton can burn more than 450 calories.
Given that most people first experience badminton in an outdoor environment, we’re now making it easier for everyone to access the sport through a new outdoor game and new prototype shuttlecock – the AirShuttle.
The aim is to find an effective, economic and sustainable way of encouraging more people to play more badminton in more places.
Thus, BWF have spent the last five years working in partnership with the Institute for Sports Research (ISR) at Nanyang Technological University to develop a new outdoor shuttlecock with increased resistance to wind, to allow people to have a more positive experience of badminton outdoors.
The main considerations were that it must be played with the same rackets and have good flight performance, spin response and durability.
The end goal was to create a new concept of the game, with the potential for a new, highly attractive form of competitive badminton, with a key focus on global participation.
During testing, we collected a considerable amount of data on the characteristics of the proposed game of the level of enjoyment for the different target groups.
The vision is for it be played on three dynamic surfaces; hard, grass and sand – with a mass participation project aimed at increasing access to the sport on any available surface, complimented by a competitive version on sand aimed at increasing its global appeal.
